LISSY'S PLACE

Over the years, our confidence is undermined by the media, the advertising world, parents, friends, adversaries and even our own inner voices.  So if we can help young ladies at an earlier age see their worth and love themselves we are helping them to also continue to love themselves as adults and pass that own to their own children.  With all the negative images and words we hear, it's time to reinforce some positive image and words to your youth,  today is our day to live and walk confidently and spread that message to others.

  • Over 70% of girls age 15 to 17 avoid normal daily activities, such as attending school, when they feel bad about their looks.

  • Among high school students, 44% of girls and 15% of guys are attempting to lose weight.

  • 75% of girls with low self-esteem reported engaging in negative activities like cutting, bullying, smoking, drinking, or disordered eating. This compares to 25% of girls with high self-esteem.

  • About 20% of teens will experience depression before they reach adulthood.

  • Teen girls that have a negative view of themselves are 4 times more likely to take part in activities with boys that they've ended up regretting later.

  • 7 in 10 girls believe that they are not good enough or don’t measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in school and relationships with friends and family members.

  • A girl’s self-esteem is more strongly related to how she views her own body shape and body weight, than how much she actually weighs.

Dear Ms. McGee:

I wanted to thank you for organizing and presenting such an excellent workshop on Positive Body Image for the participants of the YWCA Skills for Success Summer Camp. I was impressed with the thoughtfulness you put into outlining and presenting the workshop.  It was powerful to see the girl’s start the workshop by thinking about who they are including the challenges they face and the influence those challenges can have in cultivating compassion and building community.  They enjoyed encouraging each other through the positive qualities boards you had them create.

All the of the girl’s benefited greatly from the presentation and it seemed they were able to reflect on their personal strengths and their unique qualities. They enjoyed having a supportive and comfortable space to ask questions about dating and dealing with conflict.  As a program coordinator, I appreciated the sheer number of workshop presenters, each providing the girls with a slightly different perspective and experience to draw from.

Each workshop participant was challenged to try something new, accept their own beauty and support each other.  I know they truly valued the time they spent with the woman of Big Beautiful and Blessed.  It was generous of the presenters to share their information and encourage the young women of the Skills Camp to reach out to them as potential mentors. I hope you will have time to return next year and I highly recommend your workshop to any youth focused organization. The Positive Body Image Presentation is at the very core of what many young woman need to develop healthy social and emotional lives.

The members of Big Beautiful and Blessed have many great gifts, thank you for sharing them with the Skills for Success Program!

BIG GIRLS ROCK AWARDS!

The Big, Beautiful & Blessed group presented a positive body image workshop to our high school group. They covered a variety of topics- self esteem, relationships, health and safety to personal style and confidence. They provided facts and statistics, advice and guidance, personal stories and inspiration. Perhaps most importantly, they shared their personal time with our young ladies. There was a lot of laughter, honest real talk and some serious faces - and a whole lot of attitude on the catwalk. These women are truly dedicated to empowering other women to recognize, accept and love themselves for the powerful beings they are- inside and out. Our group is all about uplifting young women and BBB group walks the walk of strong female role models.

Journey House, Girls in the House Experience Testimonies:

Leslian- I learned that we are all beautiful in our own way. We were made that way so that we could love ourselves not so we could judge how we were made. I think that taught me no matter if I'm chunky or thin I'm beautiful and somebody loves me for it.

Natalyn- I learned that beauty comes from within and for you to see it, you have to love and accept yourself for who you are and not for what people want you to be. Everybody is beautiful and you shouldn’t let anyone tell you different. You shouldn’t change so people can like you, you should change because you want to or you shouldn’t change at all. Just be you and see where the world will take you. Thank you Big Beautiful & Blessed for teaching us even if we are pleasantly plump, skinny, weird, etc. That we are all beautiful.

Alee’cia- From this, I learned that no matter what shape or form you are beauty is from the inside and out. Some people can be beautiful on the outside but their heart can be ice cold.  Makeup, cover-ups, lip stick, mascara, and eye shadow don't make you beautiful it's improves your beauty. If you think the more make up you use to cover your natural beauty up with is making you truly beautiful, you’re wrong. Always remember if you put makeup on a troll, it's still a troll. And, if you’re a lady of thickness keep your head up your still as gorgeous (if not more) than anyone that has a different outline!

Tiffany- I learned from BBB that if you have a feature you don’t like about yourself it’s up to you to change it. There is no one other than yourself in this world that you need to make happy! So if you’re happy being petite, be it! And if your happy being Big, Beautiful, and Blessed be it, just stay happy. J

Christina- I am just super grateful there are women out there that have a genuine interest in making the lives of our young people better! I myself suffer from self-esteem issues and I got choked up a few times while the ladies were doing their presentations. We need more people like the ladies from BBB to help educate, empower, and change the loves of those around them. The workshops were brilliant, the icebreaker was cute and the information presented was invaluable. I am proud the Girls in the House took away such a confident attitude with their new found stance on loving themselves and not letting anyone tell them any different! Thank you ladies for being great, wonderful, inspirational and beautiful, inside and out! Much peace and many blessings will be in your future! I can feel it!
